For my colored clay project I threw two bowls on the wheel. I first started out with the larger bowl and used chocolate chip clay. Then I used red slip on the outside. For trimming I made it so you could see some of both clays. For the second bowl I made smaller and used red clay to throw with. For the outside I used buff clay. For trimming I did the same thing as the first bowl. For glazing I made sure that the bottom was see through and then did a cool glaze on the rest of it. These are my two favorite bowls I've made! :)
For my lidded vessel I threw on the wheel. I threw the vessel and then measured to throw the lid. Then I welded the handle on and let it dry. I used Palladium over Smokey Merlott for the glaze. I wanted to make something to hold things in. For my slab tiles I did an image transfer onto clay. I was the first one ever to successfully do it. At first it was a challenge but then when I got the technique down I got them done pretty quick. When I first fired the tile the image went right onto the clay but then when I glazed it with a clear it made the image disappear, So my solution was to just spray a clear glossy paint over it instead of glazing it. I was pretty excited when the final piece came out and overcame huge challenges.
For all three cups I threw on the wheel. The one on the left I threw a tiny cup and then welded on the octopus and handle. The one in the middle I threw on the wheel and then glazed it. The one on the right I threw the bowl and then welded on the base. My inspiration was trying to make useable cup that I could actually drink out of. This artwork is about who I am because I like sea animals and the color blue and also milk and cookies. At first I wasn't getting the right shape I wanted for the blue cup but then with some help I finally mastered it.
The glaze was fired by a wood fire. The glaze was applied by layering the glazes. Also applied by letting the glaze drip and not fixing it. I like how you can see each different layer of the piece. No we unfortunately can't do this in class. Unless someone would be willing to fire it in a wood fire. |
